Embarked Fremantle per ‘Medic’ A7 for Egypt 18.1.1916.

Roll Unit ‘B’ Company 7th Reinforcement 28th Battalion.
Bulkely disembarked at Alexandria with the 7th Reinforcement 28th Battalion 16.2.1916. He was transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion, joined the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in Alexandria and embarked overseas for France per 'Llandovery Castle’ 19.3.1916. He disembarked at Marseilles at the end of March 1916. His Battalion were taken on strength in the Somme Valley. Bulkeley was admitted to hospital with Diarrhoea 21.5.1916 and discharged to duty 29.5.1916. He was taken sick in the field and diagnosed with TB at the No.1 Casualty Clearing Station 1.7.1916 and transferred to the No. 2 General Hospital at Boulogne 6.7.1916. Bulkeley was discharged to Base Details 13.7.1916. He was transferred to the 2nd Tunnelling Company ‘A’, Mining Corps 14.7.1916. He fought at Pozieres and was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to his back and chest 30.8.1916 (Reported West Australian Newspaper 20.3.1917). He was invalided to England by Hospital Ship ‘Stad Antwerpen’ from Calais. Bulkeley was admitted to Stroud Voluntary Aid detachment (VAD) Hospital 30.8.1916. On discharge from hospital, he rejoined his unit in France 2.11.1916. Bulkeley was admitted to hospital sick with pneumonia 15.2.1917, following a very harsh winter in the trenches on the Somme. He was transferred from Le Havre by Hospital Ship ‘Llandovery Castle’ to England 16.2.1917 and admitted to Brook War Hospital 18.2.1917. He marched in to Hurdcott 4.6.1917, to Weymouth and then Parkhouse, before he was reclassified as ‘overage’ and listed for early return to Australia.

Returned/Disembarked Fremantle (5MD) 5.12.1917.
Discharged 27.12.1917 as over age.
