Military History
Taylor was promoted from Trooper to Cpl 20.11.1914, he reverted to Tpr. 12.2.1915 and was appointed Acting Cpl for the voyage.
Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Surada’ A52 to Egypt 17.2.1915.

Roll Unit 3rd Light Horse Brigade, 10th Light Horse Regiment, ‘C’ Squadron.
Taylor disembarked in Egypt 8.3.1915. He marched in to Mena Camp and after a period of intensive training, the Light Horsemen elected to go to Gallipoli as Infantry. Taylor proceeded to Alexandria, joined the MEF and embarked for Gallipoli 6.5.1915. He arrived with ‘C’ squadron on 20.5.1915 their role initially was defensive. Taylor became ill with diarrhoea and was evacuated to the 3rd Light Horse Field Hospital Mudros 17.7.1915. He was transferred to hospital the day of the Battle of Nek, where many of his comrades were killed. Taylor returned to duty 12.9.1915 and was diagnosed with influenza 22.9.1915. He was transferred to the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance 25.9.1915. At the 13th Light Horse casualty Clearing Station, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Taylor was transferred by HS ‘Assaye’ to Malta and admitted St George’s Hospital Malta with TB on the right lung 3.10.1915. Taylor left Gallipoli prior to the evacuation to Egypt. He was listed for return to Australia per HS ‘Karoola’.

Notes It is unclear if the St Matthew's Honour Roll refers to W.O Taylor or W. Taylor. The former had a wife in Guildford, but did not serve, the latter saw active service but there was no clear association with Guildford.
