Military History


Baxter enlisted and was placed at the Guildford Remount Depot 16.10.1915. He was relocated to Melbourne for training.
Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Orsova’ A67 for Egypt 12.11.1915.
Roll Rank Driver.
Roll Unit 1st Australian Remount Unit, 4th Squadron.
Baxter was appointed to Lance Corporal, Driver, at Sea 12.11.1915. He disembarked with his Battalion in Egypt. He was admitted to the 3rd General Hospital in Abbassia with jaundice 17.6.1916. As a result of his illness he was invalided to UK per Hospital Ship ‘Maheno’ from Alexandria 24.6.1916. Baxter was admitted to Wandsworth Hospital in London. On discharge from Hospital, he was transferred to the No 1 Commonwealth Depot, London 14.8.1916. He was taken on strength with 3rd Division Training Battalion at Parkhouse 26.10.1916. A month later he was transferred to and taken on strength with the 22nd Coy. 3rd Division Army Service Corps 10.11.1916. Baxter proceeded overseas to France from Southampton to reinforce his Army Service Corps Unit 30.12.1916. He was later detached for duty with Division Pack Transport in France 29.5.1917. He rejoined the 22nd Army Service Corps in 13.6.1917 as Driver. He was admitted to the General Hospital with jaundice 3.3.1917. He was promoted to Lance Corporal, 3rd Division Training 22.6.1918 and to Corporal 20.8.1918. Baxter marched out from France for return to Australia 15.1.1919. Baxter marched into Codford 7.2.1919 prior embarkation.
Embarked per ‘Anchises’ 28.2.1919.
Returned/Disembarked Albany 7.4.1919.
Discharged 3.6.1919.
Final Rank Corporal, 22nd Australian Army Service Corps.
