Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Mashobra’ A47 for Egypt 8.2.1915.

Roll Unit 10th Light Horse Regiment ‘B’ Squadron
Johnston disembarked in Egypt. After a period of intensive training, he entrained to Alexandria, joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (MEF) and embarked for Gallipoli 16.5.1915. Johnston was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to his right elbow 29.5.1915, in the defence of the landing parties. He was transferred by HS ‘Newmarket’ to 1st Casualty Clearing Station at Lemnos then to St Andrew’s Military Hospital in Malta 4.6.1915. On discharge from hospital he was taken by HS ‘Karoa’ to Alexandria 1.8.1915. He embarked for Gallipoli two days later per HT ‘Saturnia’. Johnston returned to duty and was taken on strength with his unit 9.8.1915. He participated in the August Offensive and was promoted to Lieutenant Corporal on the 19.8.1915. He fought at Hill 60 and was wounded and subsequently treated for shock 30.8.1915. He returned to duty and was treated for dysentery. Johnston was transferred by HS to the 1st General Hospital in Heliopolis, Egypt 9.9.1915. He developed eye problems and was transferred by HS ‘Formosa’ to Port Said 21.9.1915. Johnston was admitted to the Australian and New Zealand Convalescence Hospital at Helouan 4.10.1915. He continued to experience eye problems with conjunctivitis 16.2.1916 and Myopia 12.2.1916. He was listed for early return to Australia as an invalid.

Returned/Disembarked in Melbourne 28.3.1916. (Letter on file)
