Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Miltiades’ A28 for UK 9.8.1916.

Hyde disembarked at Plymouth 25.9.1916. He marched in to 13th Training Bn. at Rollestone 26.9.1916. After a period of intensive training, he proceeded overseas to France from Folkestone per SS ‘Henrietta’ 28.11.1916. He experienced the harsh winter of 1916-17 on the Somme in the trenches. The 51st Bn participated in the action that followed the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line in early 1917 and then at Messines and Polygon Wood later that year. Hyde was wounded in action in the Field, receiving a GSW to his right thigh in the first attack at Villers-Bretonneux 24.4.1918. He was transferred to hospital in Rouen then invalided per HS ‘Carisbrook Castle’ to the UK. Hyde was admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital at Birmingham 29.4.1918. He was then transferred to 3d Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford 6.5.1918. T On discharge he marched in to Hurdcott 10.5.1918. He was transferred to No. 4 Com. Depot 29.6.1918. Hyde marched out with the Training Bde ex Hurdcott for France 6.7.1918. He embarked for France 29.8.1918 and rejoined his Unit 6.9.1918 the 551st Bn fought at Vermand, where the troop took front line position along the peronne -St.Quentin railway. Hyde was wounded in this action (second time), receiving severe head injuries with a GSW to his jaw, neck, shoulder 14.9.1918. He was transferred by 4th Field Australian Ambulance to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station. Hyde Died of Wounds received in action in the Field 17.9.1918. He was buried at British and Indian Cemetery, La Chapelette, Peronne, Somme, France 1 ¼ miles South of Peronne, France. (62.C.O.9a.7.6.) Plot C, Row 3. The burial was conducted by Rev. F.R. Thurlow.
