Military History


Hyde was sent to NCO School at the 22nd Depot in WA 17.1.1916. He was appointed Cpl of ‘C’ Coy 3rd area Bn. Belmont 28.2.1916 and Sgt. at No. 6 Depot Blackboy Hill 28.3.1916 .

Hyde disembarked at Suez with his Bn. He joined the BEF at Alexandria and embarked for France per ‘Ionian’ 7.6.1916. He disembarked with his Unit at Marseilles 14.6.1916. He marched in to 4th Division Base at Etaples 17.6.1916 Hyde reverted to rank on joining the 16th Bn. 26.10.1916. Hyde was taken on strength in the field on the Somme 30.10.1916. He became sick in the field and was admitted to the 22nd General Hospital with osteomyelitis 9.12.1916. He was transferred to England as an invalid and admitted to the Bevan Military Hospital in Kent 31.12.1916. Hyde returned to France 29.4.1917 and rejoined his unit 3.5.1917 and fought at Bullecourt. Hyde was diagnose with sinus problems and returned to Hospital at Boulogne 20.8.1917. He was invalided to England and diagnosed with a debility at Aldershot and transferred to the Army Dermatological Hospital(ADH) at Bulford 3.11.1917. Hyde was recommended for Discharge 5.12.1917 being permanently unfit for service. Hyde was listed for early return to Australia.
Embarked for Australia per HT ‘Runic’ 20.12.1917.
Returned/Disembarked January 1918.
Discharged 27.2.1918.
Final Rank Private 16th Bn AIF.
Medical Condition Permanently unfit/ Invalided with osteomyelitis.
