Military History
Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Ajana’ A31 for Egypt 22.12.1915.

Devereux disembarked at Suez with the 16th Bn. After the Gallipoli campaign of 1915, the 16th Bn. received soldiers form the 48th Bn, the 4th Brigade was combined with the 12th and 13th Brigade. (AWM 16th Bn). Devereux was taken on strength with the 24th Brigade and posted with the 112th Howitzer Battery 13.3.1916. With his new Battery, he joined BEF and embarked at Alexandria for Marseilles 13.3.1916. The 24th Bde. was initially stationed in the Nursery Sector at Armentieres before moving to the front on the Somme. Devereux was appointed T/Driver 8.5.1916 with 112th Battery 24th FAB. In August 1916 they fought against a German Counter attack at Pozieres and later Mouquet Farm and Flers. He transferred to 12th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) in 25.1.1917 and the 6th Army Field Brigade (AFB) 25.1.1917. Devereux was re-mustered as a Gunner 4.4.1917. He was transferred back to the 6th Army FAB 27.5.1917. Devereux became sick in the field and was transferred by the 15th Field Ambulance to the 14th General Hospital at Wimereux. He was then invalided to England per HS ‘St. Dennis’ sick, to 22.12.1917. He was admitted to Harefield Hospital with bronchitis. He rejoined his unit in France 1.3.1918. He became sick a second time in the Field with bronchitis and was transferred by the 1st SA Field Ambulance to the 1st General Hospital at Rouen 21.10.1918. He was invalided to England and was admitted to the Duchess of Connaught, Red Cross Hospital 24.10.1918 with bronchitis. Devereux was discharged from Hospital 7.12.1918 and invalided to Australia with bronchitis.

Discharged 5.6.1919 with disability bronchitis.
