Military History


Enlisted as Private with 10th Light Horse.
Embarked per HMS ‘Mongolia’ for Egypt 22.11.1915
Roll Rank Trooper.
Roll Unit 12th Reinforcement, 10th Light Horse.
Barker disembarked at Egypt and marched in to Heliopolis. He was evacuated sick with conjunctivitis to Serapeum 8.6.1916, then transferred to Hospital at Abbassia with Corneal opacities. Barker was diagnosed with defective vision and listed for early to return to Australia. He embarked from Suez for Australia per ‘Seang Choon’ 17.7.1916 and disembarked at Fremantle 27.8.1916.
After a period of rest, Barker re enlisted 27.10.1916 and transferred to the Artillery as a Gunner 1.12.1916. He changed to the Trench Mortar Battery as Gunner 16.4.1916 and moved to Broad Meadows, for Artillery training. Barker reverted to rank of Private 3.10.1916.
He embarked from Melbourne per HMAT ‘Aeneas’ A60 for UK 30.10.1916 with a rank of Private with the 27th Reinforcement, 11th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force.
Barker was admitted to Hospital at sea 5.11.1917. He disembarked with the 27th Reinforcement, 11th Battalion at Devonport 27.12.1917 and marched in to 2nd Training Battalion at Sutton Veny 27.12.1917. Barker was diagnosed with Trachoma and listed for early return to Australia with defective vision 15.2.1918.
Embarked for return to Australia per ‘Llan Stephan Castle’ 15.2.1918.
Returned/Disembarked Fremantle, April 1918.
Discharged NK.
Final Rank Private, 11th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force.
Medical Condition Invalided with Trachoma and defective vision.
Awards and Medals British War Medal, Victory Medal.
