Butt disembarked at Devonport England 27.3.1917 with his Railway Corps. He marched in to St. Lucia Barracks , Bordon 27.3.1917. Butt proceeded overseas to France 11.5.1917. He was detached for duty with 59th Australian Railways Operating Division (AROD) at Borre. He rejoined unit after leave 14.10.1917. Butt received a new designation to the 5th Australian Broad Gauge Railway Operating Division (ABGROD) at Borre. He was promoted to Temporary Corporal 29.1.1919.
Embarked for Australia per ‘Konigan Louise’ from London 21.6.1919.
Returned/Disembarked Fremantle 4.8.1919.
Discharged 11.9.1919.
Final Rank Temporary 2nd Corporal. 5th Australian Broad Gauge Railway Operationing division.
