Military History
Fry proceeded with his Artillery unit to Maribyrnong, Vic. for Training with the Field Artillery.
Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Hororata’ A20 for UK 23.11.1916.
Roll Rank Gunner.
Roll Unit 25th Reinf 8th Field Artillery Brigade.
Fry disembarked at Plymouth England with the Field Artillery Brigade (FAB 29.1.1917. He marched in to Details Camp at Perham Downs 30.1.1917 and was then transferred to Larkhill 26.3.1917. He went AWOL 19.3.1917 and was fined. Fry proceeded overseas to France from Southampton 23.7.1917. He transferred to the 3rd Light Trench Mortar Battery 5.8.1917. Fry was wounded in action 20.9.1917, possibly in the Battle of Menin Road. He received a head contusion (hematoma and possible skull fracture) from the head wound. (reported in West Australian Newspaper 24.10.1917and West Australian Newspaper 10.6.1918). He returned to his unit in France 27.9.1917, but listed was sick 23.0.1917 and was invalided to England suffering neurasthenia 31.10.1917. He was admitted to the 2nd General Hospital at East Brighton. He was listed for early return to Australia as an invalid- for a ‘change’.
Embarked England to Suez per HS ‘Dunluce Castle’, 8.4.1918 and then from Suez to Fremantle per HT ‘Karoola’ 27.4.1918.
Returned/Disembarked Fremantle 12.5.1918.
Discharged 10.6.1918.
Final Rank Gunner 3rd Light Trench Mortar Battery.
Medical Condition Invalided/ wounded Neurasthenia (Shell shock)
