Military History


Brown trained at Guildford HQ. with the Field Artillery. He was transferred to the 89th Depot as Private 21.10.1916. Brown was promoted to Gunner and was relocated to Maribyrnong, Victoria for further training. He joined the 24th Howitzer Brigade, 10th Reinforcement 19.12.1916.
Embarked Sydney per RMS ‘Osterley’ for England 10.2.1917.

Brown disembarked at Plymouth with his unit 11.4.1917. He marched in to Larkhill, UK. Brown and his unit proceeded overseas to France 15.8.1917. Brown was transferred to 3rd Details Army Corps from 24th Howitzer Brigade, Field Artillery Brigade 4.9.1917. He was promoted to Driver and transferred to 8th Field Artillery Brigade 29.11.1917. Brown reverted to Gunner 14.1.1918. He served on the Western Front in France. He was wounded in action at Mericourt-l’Abbe near Heilly 20.4.1918. The Red Cross files detail that he was on duty at a telephone control in a dugout, when he was hit in the back by a shell. Brown was transferred to the Advanced Dressing Station, 10th Australian Field Ambulance with gunshot wounds to chest and abdomen 20.4.1918. He died of wounds received in the field, an hour after arriving at the Dressing Station. Brown was buried by Major H. H. Horsehead Chaplain, at the Military Cemetery at Mericourt-l'Abbe Communal Cemetery Extension, Mericourt-l'Abbe, Peronne, Picardie, France. (3 ¾ miles NNE of Corbie).

Medical Condition Deceased, died of wounds.

Notes He was known as 'Brownie' to his mates.
