He took part in operations in New Guinea in 1916. After this period he served 5 months at the London Depot and returned to HMS ‘Australia’ for 1 year. He held the rank of Leading Seaman during WW1. After the War he served on HMS ‘Sydney’ from 1919 to 1923.
