Military History
The 44th Battalion was raised in Claremont WA in February 1916. Everett sailed with the first contingent of the 44th Battalion. He disembarked at Plymouth and marched in to Training Camp in England in June 1916. After 5 months of intensive training, he embarked from South ampton for France on 25.11.1916. They marched into the Brigade Details Camp in France on 27.11.1916. The 44th Battalion entered the front line trenches on the Somme on 29.12.1916. Everett and his Battalion spent the long harsh winter of 1916-17 in difficult conditions in the trenches. Everett earned two blue Chevrons in this period. He fought at Messines in Belgium and Broodseinde Ridge in June 1917. On 14.8 1917 Everett became ill and was taken from the field by the 53rd Field Ambulance to the 55th Casualty Clearing Station and transferred to 5th General Hospital at Rouen 15.8.1917. Everett was diagnosed with myalgia and transferred by HS 'St Patrick' to England 18.8.1917. He was admitted to Clan Park Hospital affiliated with the Royal Herbert Hospital in Woolwich with Rheumatism and Myalgia 19.8.1917. Everett was transferred to the 3rd Auxilliary Hospital in Dartford 2.9.1917. He marched out to Weymouth, was detailed as unfit for active servcice and listed for early return to Australia as an invalid 10.9.1918.

Notes Everett's son John (SN 2375) was KIA 3.8.1916. Everett was a brickmaker who moved to Guildford c1897- 1910. He lived on GTL 154 Helena St where he had a small brickyard . Everett made the bricks for the Municpal stables at the rear of the old Council Chambers 1906 (Guildford Municipal Minute Books 18.4.1906. SRO. Acc 1110/12 p101).
