Embarked Fremantle HMAT ‘Argyllshire’A28 9.11.1916 for UK.
Roll Rank Private.
Roll Unit 11th Brigade, 3rd Division, 44th Battalion, 5th Reinf.
Young disembarked at Devonport 10.1.1917. He marched in to the 11th Training Bn. at Durrington. After a period of intensive training, he proceeded overseas to France from Folkestone 10.4.1917. Young was taken on strength with the 44th Bn. from the 6th Reinf.13.4.1917. The 44th Bn. fought its first major battle at Messines in June 7-10 1917 and was then involved in fighting at Ypres on the Somme. Of the 992 men who fought with the 44th Bn. at Ypres only 192 returned unscathed.(AWM 44th Bn) Young was appointed L/Cpl. 29.7.1917 and was wounded in action at Ypres 1.8.1917 with GSWs to his leg and left hand. (reported Western Argus 11.9.1917 p37) He was evacuated to England per HS ‘Kalyan’ and admitted to the 1st London General Hospital at Camberwell 7.8.1917. He was promoted to T./Cpl. 27.3.1918 and transferred to the No 1 Command Depot at Sutton Veny 27.3.1918. Young was listed for return to Australia in 1919.
