Military History


Wilson enlisted as a Private with the 23rd FAB 8.2.1916. He transferred as Artillery Reinf. to Maribyrnong, Vic. for further Artillery training 11.3.1916. He prepared for embarkation as a Driver with the 3rd Division
Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Barambah’ A37 for England 27.6.1916.

Wilson disembarked at Plymouth 25.8.1916. He transferred to the 3rd DAC at Larkhill 28.8.1916. Wilson proceeded overseas to France after 3 months intensive training 24.11.1916. the 3rd Division was placed under the command of major General John Monash (3rd division Wikipedia). The 3rd Division was moved to Messiness- Wytschaete Ridge in April 1917. Wilson was wounded in action being gassed in May 1917. He returned to his unit in France. In February 1918 whilst on furlough in England he was admitted to Bulford hospital with a disability 1.2.1918. He was discharged 8.3.1918 to the Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery (RBAA) Wilson proceeded overseas to France via Southampton 1.6.1918 and marched in to 3rd Aust. Div. Trench Mortar Bde. 5.6.1918 as Driver. In August 1918 the Third Divison was launched into the Allied one Hundred Days War, fighting around Amiens in August 1918. Wilson nominated to revert to Gunner and was transferred to the 5th Medium Trench Mortar Battery 29.8.1918. He was seriously wounded in action (2nd time) receiving a GSW to his left foot 29.9.1918. Wilson was invalided to the UK 5.10.1918. He was transferred to the 2nd South General Hospital at Bristol 6.10.1918. Granted extended leave 24.12.1918 –4.1.1919 and was listed for early return to Australia.

Returned/Disembarked Fremantle 7.3.1919.
Discharged 14.4.1919.
