Military History
Enlisted as Trooper 20.10 1914 – 11.11.1914 and Driver from 11.11.1914.
Embarked per HMAT ‘Mashobra’ A2 for Egypt 8.2.1915.

Roll Unit Machine Gun Section, 10th Light Horse Regiment.
Brede disembarked in Egypt with the 10th Light Horse Regiment Machine Gun Section. His Regiment after several months of intensive training his unit entrained to Alexandria and joined Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He embarked for Gallipoli 8.5.1915. Brede was slightly wounded in a bivouac at Gallipoli as Field Messenger 19.5.1915. He was promoted to Lance Corporal whilst at Gallipoli 20.10.1915. He embarked from Gallipoli for Alexandria 10.11.1915. He transferred from Machine Gun Section 10th Light Horse to 3rd Australian Machine Gun Squadron 27.7.1916. Brede was promoted to Corporal 1.9.1916, to Temporary Sergeant 1.11.1916 and to Sergeant 20.12.1916. He was further promoted to Acting SSM 26.7.1917 and to Temp. Squadron Sergeant Major. Brede transferred to the Machine Gun Training Squadron at the Cadet School in Zietoun. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant 9.3.1918. His excellent leadership qualities were noted by those in command. Brede marched out to the 3rd Australian Machine Gun Squadron 7.4.1918. Brede received a gunshot wound to his hand 2.5.1918 and was transferred to 66th Casualty Clearing Station and then to the 66th Stationary Hospital 3.5.1915. He was sent to the 36th Stationary Hospital at Gaza 5.5.1918. After several other transfers, he was admitted to the No 14 General Hospital at Port Said 11.5.1918. Brede was discharged from hospital to Rest Camp 20.5.1918. He marched out to Moascar 26.5.1918 and was taken on strength with the Machine Gun Squadron 4.6.1918. Brede was promoted to Lieutenant 9.6.1918. During his time with the Egyptian Expeditionary Forces, he served in Palestine and Syria. Brede embarked per HT ‘Malwa’ to UK 7.5.1919. He marched into the Australian Imperial Force Depot at Tidworth 24.6.1919 then to No.2 Group at Sutton Veny. Lieutenant Brede reported for Duty as Sports Officer for the return Voyage.
Embarked from England per SS ‘Canberra’ for Australia having served in Gallipoli, Palestine, Syria.
Returned/Disembarked Fremantle 3.9.1919.
Appointment Terminated 24.9.1919.
Final Rank Lieutenant, 10th Light Horse Regiment, 3rd Australian Light Horse Brigade.
Medical Condition NK (earlier gunshot wound to hand).
