Embarked Fremantle per ‘Ascanius’ A 11 for Egypt 2.11.1914.

Roll Unit 3rd Brigade, 11th Infantry Battalion, ‘C’ Coy, AIF.
Walsh disembarked in Egypt with his Bn. After a period of intense training he entrained to Alexandria, joined the MEF and embarked per HMAT ‘Suffolk’ for Gallipoli. The 3rd Bde. was the covering force for the Anzac landing on April 25th 1915. Wash was wounded in the battle of Lone Pine at Gallipoli 16.8.1915. He received a GSW to his right hand. He was transferred to the Australian Casualty Clearing Station 16.8.1915, then evacuated per HS ‘Ascanius’ to Malta 19.8.1915 (Reported West Australian Newspaper 18.9.1915). for Malta Walsh disembarked at Malta 25.8.1915 and was admitted to St. David's Hospital. He was invalided to England per HS ‘Brasile’ with bronchitis 9.9.1915 and admitted to King George’s Hospital 16.9.1915. Walsh was transferred to the Australian Intermediate Depot at Abbey Wood, then was transferred to Monte Video Weymouth 2.5.1916. Walsh was admitted to Hospital at Bulford Camp 24.6.1916. On recovery he returned to Abbey Wood. His ill health continued (19.10.1915) with bronchitis 22.9.1916, 13.10.1916, 6.12.1916, hospitalised with debility then discharged and invalided 1917 with chronic bronchitis. His file noted he had been in and out of hospital since his arrival in England and saw no active service on the Western Front. Walsh was discharged as permanently unfit for active service and general or home service. He was listed for early return to Australia as an invalid.
