The 16th Bn. was one of the first WA regiments to be formed. The new recruits were transported to Melbourne to join the SA recruits. After a period of training, they proceeded for embarkation overseas.
Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Ceramic’ A40 for Egypt 22.12.1914.

Terry disembarked at Alexandria and marched in to Mena Camp Cairo. He entrained to Alexandria, joined MEF and embarked for the Dardanelles. They landed at Gallipoli 25.4.1915. Terry received a head wound, probably at Bloody Angle 2.5.1915. He returned to duty, however, became sick with dysentery and was admitted to the 4th Field Ambulance Station 9.5.1915. He was transferred by HMT ‘Scotian’ to the No1 General Hospital 27.6.1915, then to Helouan 1.7.1915 and discharged to Zietoun 9.7.1915. He rejoined his unit at ANZAC 21.7.1915. Terry developed inner ear problems and was transferred by HS ‘Huntsgreen’ to Malta 2.9.1915. Terry was invalided to England 9.9.1915 and admitted to the Southern General Hospital Birmingham, 19.5.1915. On recovery, he returned to the EEF in Egypt for duty 31.12.1915. His return to Egypt coincided with the evacuation of troops from Gallipoli. The AIF reorganized and prepared troops for departure to the Western Front. Terry entrained to Alexandria, joined the BEF and embarked for France 1.6.1916. He disembarked at Marseilles 6.6.1916. The first major battle the 16th Bn fought in, was at Pozieres in July 1917 (AWM 16th Bn.). Terry was wounded in action at Messines, France, with shell shock 10.8.1916. He rejoined his unit 15.8.1916 and was promoted to Cpl. 16.8.1916. Terry was awarded the Military Medal 23.6.1916. He proceeded to Cambridge to study for his Commission 5.7.1917. Terry was promoted to 2nd Lieut. 3.11.1917 and proceeded to France to join his unit 18.11.1917. He was congratulated for a very successful mark in the Lewis Gun Course. Terry rejoined his Unit 15.4.1918. He was promoted to Lieut. 1.5.1918. Terry again received commendation on his performance at the Intelligence School Course in September 1918. Following cessation of hostilities, Terry returned to England 8.10.1918 for demobilization and embarkation to Australia.

‘This Non Commissioned Office is brought under notice for his bravery and excellent work in connection with operations against Messiness during the period of 7-13th June 1917. During this period he was employed as a Scout…he displayed total disregard for danger in all operations… he is very strongly recommended for distinction.’

Notes Terry was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry and devotion to duty during the battle of Messines. He trained for a commission at Trinity College in Cambridge (WAN 17.9.1917)
Terry was one of 4 children born to Marmaduke and Cathy Terry. After his mother’s death, Marmaduke married Filumena Bussell. The boys attended Guildford Grammar School from their home in Turton St. Guildford. WA. They lived next to Grace (nee Bussell) Brockman.
Terry’s two brothers Donald and Marmaduke both served in WW1, Marmaduke was KIA.
