Embarked Fremantle HMAT ‘Demosthenes’ A64 for Egypt 22.7.1915.

Roll Unit 2nd Reinf, 28th Battalion, 7th Brigade, AIF.
Stewart disembarked with his Bn. at Suez. He reverted to rank on joining 28th Bn. at Zeitoun He joined MEF at Alexandria as postal clerk 25.10.1915. Stewart joined his Bn. at Tel-el- Kebir 23.1.1916 and reverted to rank. He was promoted to L/ Cpl in Ismailia 12.2.1916 and moved to Alexandria. The 28th Bn. embarked at Alexandria with BEF for France 16.3.1916. They disembarked at Marseille 22.3.1916. The 28th Bn. was involved in their first major action at Pozieres. Stewart was reported missing in action on the Battlefield at Pozieres 29.7.1916 (West Australian Newspaper 26 9 1916) (West Australian Newspaper 26.10.1916). This was later changed to KIA 29.7.1916. Red Cross files confirmed his death by shrapnel at Pozieres (AWM Red Cross File) and left un buried in the field. A burial was later witnessed by Rev. W.E. Dexter. Stewart's death was reported in news papers (West Australian Newspaper 3.11.1916). His name is Commemorated at the Villers-Bretoneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Villers-Bretonneux Area, Picardie, France.
