Military History
Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Itonus’ A50 for Egypt 22.2.1915.

Roll Unit 4th Infantry Brigade, 16th infantry Battalion, 2nd Reinforcements
Southern disembarked at Alexandria, Egypt with the 16th Bn. 2nd Reinf. On landing, the 16th Bn. became part of the Australian and New Zealand Div. (ANZAC) and trained at Heliopolis. Southern‘s Unit proceeded to Alexandria to join the MEF and embarked for Gallipoli 12.4.1915. The 16th Bn. was involved in the attack on Bloody Angle near Quinn's Post on 2.5.1915. Southern was reported missing in action 2.5.1915. A Court of Enquiry determined he was KIA 2.5.1915. Southern’s body was not located and there was no formal burial. After the war, the physical remains of this unit, who were killed at Bloody Angle, were buried at Quinn’s Post Cemetery. Southern and other men in his platoon, are commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Cannakkale Province, Turkey.

Notes His brother Capt. Harold Alfred Southern, also of the 16th Bn was KIA 2/3 May 1915.
