Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Borda’ A30 for UK 29.6.1917.

Fryer- Smith disembarked at Plymouth 25.8.1917. He marched in to 4th Training Bn. at Codford 26.8.1917. He was appointed Acting L/.Cpl. at Codford 31.8.1917. He reverted to Ranks 1.11.1917. Fryer-Smith proceeded overseas to France from Southampton 4.12.1917. He marched in to the 3rd Australian Division Base Depot (ADBD) 5.12.1917. Fryer-Smith was allotted to reinforce the 44th Bn. 10.12.1917 and was taken on strength 20.1.1918. Fryer- Smith was wounded in action (gassed) during the Battle of Hamel 26.8.1918. He rejoined his unit 14.10.1918. Fryer-Smith became ill in France 25.12.1918 and was invalided to England. He was admitted to Graylingwell War Hospital at Chichester with rheumatism 30.12.1918. Fryer- Smith was granted leave for the purpose of studying fruit growing 24.12.1918 - 28.2.1919. He was then granted an extension, with pay, to 29.5.1919 and was listed for return to Australia.

Returned/Disembarked Fremantle 10.8.1919.
Discharged 20.9.1919.
