Military History
Enlisted as Private 2.4.1917. Note mother signed form that he could not embark until he was 19 years of age. He transferred to Artillery as Gunner 16.4.1917. Sainsbury was sent to Maribyrnong, Vic. for Artillery training 15.7.1917.
Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Port Sydney’ A15 for Egypt 9.11.1917.

Sainsbury disembarked in Egypt 12.12.1917. After a period of training, he entrained to Alexandria, joined the BEF and embarked for the UK 18.12.1917. He disembarked at Taranto, Italy 22.12.1917 and re-embarked for England. Sainsbury disembarked at Southampton 4.1.1918. He marched in to Heytesbury 4.1.1918. Sainsbury was hospitalised at Bulford with a debility 9.5.1918. He proceeded overseas to France 28.6.1918 and joined the Australian General Base Depot (AGBD) in Rouelles 29.6.1918. He transferred to 4th Divisional Artillery Column (DAC) 4.9.1918 and was appointed Driver with DAC 24.9.1918. The 4th Divisional Artillery fought in the Allied advance on the Hindenburg Line and the finally reaching the German Hindenburg outpost at Bellenglise. In September. The 4th FAB was relieved in mid October and were marching through Peronne when news of the Armistice reached them (AWM 4th Division FAB)
