Embarked Fremantle per HMAT A54 ‘Runic’ 29.1.1916.
Roll Rank Private.
Roll Unit 13th Reinforcement, 16th Battalion.
Bingham disembarked at Alexandria and marched in to Zietoun 26.2.1916. He was taken on Strength with his Battalion at Serapeum 2.4.1916. The 16th Battalion was split with the reorganization of Australian Imperial Force Battalions in 1916. Bingham was transferred to the 48th Battalion 2.4.1916. After several months of training he joined the British Expeditionary Force and embarked from Alexandria for France 2.6.1916. He disembarked with his Battalion unit at Marseilles 9.6.1916. The 48th Battalion fought at Pozieres in the trenches. Bingham was admitted sick to hospital 2.8.1916, 3.8.1916, 31.8.1916, 4.8.1916. He embarked per Hospital Ship ‘Jan Brydl’ for England and was admitted to the Northland Hospital, Gosforth, Newcastle. Bingham did not make a good recovery, as was deemed unfit for active service and listed for early return to Australia with disability and rheumatism.

Notes He had two brothers Ernest and Jack, both of whom served in WW1. He enlisted with his brother Ernest Bingham who was later killed In Action. Stephen died in 1945. His home 'Redcliffe Grove' is no longer standing.
