Military History
Read enlisted as Private, joined the Artillery Reinforcements and was transported to Maribyrnong, Victoria for further training 1.12.1916.
Embarked Melbourne per ‘Ascanius’ A11 for England 11.5.1917.

Roll Unit 4th Division, 10th Field Artillery Brigade, 12th Reinf.
Read disembarked at Devonport with the 10th Field Artillery Bde. (FAB) 20.7.1917. He marched in to Driver Training at Larkhill. After several months of intensive training, he proceeded overseas to France via Southampton 17.10.1917. Read transferred to the 11th FAB 4th Div. 23.10.1917 and fought at Passchendaele. He took leave to England and was admitted to Harefield Hospital UK - with paresis of the muscle wall of abdomen 3.11.1918. Read rejoined his unit in France 15.3.1919. He was admitted to hospital with scabies 21.5.1919. On discharge he was listed for return to Australia.
Embarked Southampton per ‘Main’ for return to Australia 23.7.1919.
Returned/Disembarked Fremantle 27.9.1919.
Discharged 5.11.1919.
Final Rank Driver, 11th Field Artillery Brigade.

Notes Read's grandparents were Woods and they had a butchering business in James Street, Guildford. His sister lived at 229 James Street, Guildford and was the contact address for his brother Bertram Oswald. His brother Read CW was recorded at James Street, West Guildford. His actual address is unclear.
