Embarked Fremantle per HMAT 'Medic’ A7 for Egypt 13.10.1914.

Roll Unit 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, 8th Battery.
Pretty disembarked with the FAB in Egypt. He entrained for Alexandria with his Unit and joined the MEF for embarkation to Gallipoli 4.4.1915. Pretty was treated as sick in the Field at Gallipoli and admitted to hospital (details unspecified). He rejoined the 8th Battery 9.7.1915 He was admitted sick to Hospital with serious pyrexia and was transferred by Hospital Ship ’Glenard Castle’ to Alexandria 30.9.1915. He was admitted to Heliopolis Hospital with dysentery 5.10.1915. Pretty was sick at Tel-el Kebir with and was transferred to the No.2 Casualty Clearing Station with suspected scarlet fever and was described as seriously ill 17.1.1916. He was transferred to the No.2 General Hospital at Cairo had his tonsils removed 21.1.1916. Pretty was discharged from Hospital 1.3.1916 and rejoined his Unit at Tel-el Kebir 5.3.1916. With his unit the 8th Battery, he proceeded to Alexandria and joined the BEF and embarked for France 23.3.1916. They disembarked at Marseilles 29.3.1916
Pretty was transferred to the V1A Heavy Trench Mortar Battery 15.5.1916 and taken on strength with this unit at Pozieres. He was promoted to Bombardier 28.7.1916, Acting Corporal 14.8.1916 and Corporal 7.11.1916. Pretty was detached for duty for 2 weeks with the 2nd Field Artillery Bde. 9.11.1916-26.11.1916. He was transferred by the 3rd Australian Field Ambulance to No.2 Casualty Clearing Station with laryngitis 2.1.1918. He was transferred by HS ‘St. Dennis’ to England and admitted to the Beaufort War Hospital 12.1.1918. He was granted furlough 19.1.1918- 12.2.1918. Pretty marched in to Hurdcott. He proceeded overseas to France from Southampton 17.5.1918. He marched in to his Unit 20.5.1918 and transferred to the 1st Div. Trench Mortar Bde. 8.7.1918. Pretty was deemed unfit for service and transferred back to England for return to Australia. Rheumatism?.
