Military History
Porter attended NCO School Belmont. WA. 1.4.1917. He was promoted to Cpl. 9.5.1916. and to Sgt. 28.8.1916.
Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Clan McGillivray’ 18.9.1916

Roll Unit 20th Reinf, 11th Battalion, AIF
Sgt. Porter disembarked with the 11th Bn. at Plymouth 2.11.1916 and marched in to the 3rd Training Bn. at Perham Downs. The 3rd Training Bn. proceeded overseas to France from Folkestone per ‘Golden Eagle’ 17.12.1916. Porter everted to rank of Private on arrival at Etaples, France with the 1st Australian Division. He fought in the Somme offensive. Porter was promoted to T/Cpl. 20.4.1917, to Cpl. then Sgt 12.5.1917. He was promoted to 2nd Lieut. 19.5.1917 and to Lieut. 19.8.1917. In February 1918 he attended aeroplane school and rejoined his Bn. 15.2.1918.
Porter was wounded in action in the Field at Hollebeke (1st time), with severe exposure to gas 7.3.1918. The 1st Field Ambulance transferred him to the No.2 Casualty Clearing Station. He was invalided to England per Hospital Ship ‘St Denis’ 14.3.1917. Porter was Admitted to 3rd London General Hospital 14.3.1918 and assessed as fit for active service and discharged the Overseas Training Bde. He proceeded overseas to France from Folkestone 24.6.1918 and rejoined his Bn. He was wounded in action (2nd Time) with GSW to of the fingers right hand 10.8.1918 in the Wizernes area. He was taken by the 5th Field Ambulance to the 53rd Casualty Clearing Station and admitted to the 3rd Australian Hospital in France. Porter was transferred to HS ‘Essequibo’ invalided to UK 27.8.1918. He was discharged to Sutton Veny 25.10.1918 and given early return to Australia as an invalid.
