Military History

Montague as 2nd Lieut was placed in command of the Machine Gun Section of the West Australian Infantry Regiment at Fremantle in 1911. (Sunday Times 23.7.1911 p1)

Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ’Ascanius’ A 11 for Egypt 29.6.1915.
Roll Rank Captain.
Roll Unit 28th Battalion, 14th Reinf, ‘A’ Company, AIF.
Montgomery disembarked in Egypt with the 28th Bn. He joined MEF at Alexandria and embarked per HT ‘Invernia’ for Gallipoli 4.9.1915. Montgomery became sick with jaundiced/ peritonitis and was transferred by the 7th Field Ambulance for evacuation 9.10.1915. He was transferred by HS to the No.1 General Hospital at Heliopolis 22.11.1915. He was seriously ill with enteric fever and returned to WA. He was reported to be dangerously ill (West Australian Newspaper 19.10.1916). Montgomery returned to Australia for 4 months ‘change’. He embarked at Suez for Australia per ‘Ulysses’ 3.1.1916. Montgomery disembarked at Fremantle 29.1.1916 for a   period of recuperation. On recovery he worked as an Officer at the 5th Military District Training Camp at Bunbury. (West Australian Newspaper 4.5.1916 p7). Montgomery re embarked at Fremantle per HMAT ‘Miltiades’ A28 for England 7.8.1916. He embarked as Captain with the 28th Bn. 14th Reinf.
Montgomery disembarked at Plymouth 25.9.1916. He marched in to 7th Training Bn. at Rollestone. He became sick with Influenza and was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital 5.2.1917. On recovery, he proceeded overseas to France 26.3.1917. He marched in to the 2nd Australian Div. base at Etaples. 1.4.1917. Montgomery sprained his ankle 25.6.1917 and was hospitalised. He rejoined his Unit 2.7.1917. The 28th Bn. fought its first major battle on the Somme at Pozieres between July and August 1917. Montgomery was wounded in action with a GSW to his abdomen. He was pronounced dangerously ill 21.9.1917 (West Australian Newspaper 19.10.1917). Montgomery was taken to the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station then transferred to HS ‘Princess Elizabeth’ for transfer to England 4.10.1917. Montgomery was admitted to the 2nd London General Hospital 7.10.1917. He was listed for return to Australia and leave as invalid with a rapid, irritable heart and abdominal and kidney damage.

Appointment Terminated 9.4.1918.

Notes Payne is listed as Alexander Manon Payne Montgomery in the AWM records
His association with Guildford has not been determinedalthough there is record of him
