Enlisted in Melbourne and sent to Broadmeadow, NSW for Artillery training.
Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Afric’ for Egypt 5.1.1916.

Roll Unit 1st Divisional Ammunition Column, 1st Field Artillery Brigade, 13th Reinf.
Mather disembarked in Egypt. He marched in to Cairo to 1st Division Ammunition Column (DAC) and was posted to the No.1 section 10.2.1916. He was appointed Temp/Cpl. at Zeitoun, Cairo 19.2.1916. Masters was transferred to the 22nd Battery at Tel-el- Kebir 8.3.1916. He entrained to Alexandria and joined the BEF for embarkation to France 21.3.1916. Mather disembarked at Marseilles 28.3.1916. Mather transferred to the 21st Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) and taken on strength 16.5.1916. He was promoted to Temp. Bombardier 10.10.1916, then reverted to Acting Bombardier 14.11.1916. He transferred to the 1st Brigade 24.1.1917 and was promoted to Bombardier Vice 2.5.1917. Mather was admitted to hospital wounded with gassing 10.10.1917. He rejoined his Unit from Hospital 20.11.1917. Mather was admitted to hospital with a debility. He was wounded in action a second time (Gassed) 23.4.1918. Mather was discharged from Hospital 28.8.1918. He was promoted to Temp/ Sgt. 22.9.1918 and then to Sgt. 22.12.1918. He marched out to England for an educational course 2.3.1919 following demobilisation and reported to the Survey School, Southampton 13.3.1919. Mather was listed for return to Australia.
