Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Berrima’ A35 for England 23.12.1916.

Masters was admitted to the ship’s hospital with mumps 11.2.1917. He disembarked at Devonport 16.2.1917. He transferred to the Military Hospital at Devonport 18.2.1917. On discharge from Hospital, he marched into Perham Downs 21.2.1917. Masters marched in to Codford to the 4th Training Bn. 24.2.1917. He proceeded o/seas to France with 4th Training Bn. via Southampton 9.7.1917. Masters marched in to the Australian Divisional Base Depot (ADBD) at Havre 10.7.1917. Masters was taken on strength in the Field 4.8.1917. The 16th Bn. fought at Mouquet Farm as part of the Battle of the Somme in August and September 1917. In this battle they lost almost 2/3 of their Bn. (Mouquet Farm/Western Front). Masters marched out to Australian Infantry Base Depot (AIBD) to the Medical Board 7.12.1917. He was sent to England ex AIDB 15.12.1917. Masters was paid in the Field 25.4.1918 and listed for early return to Australia as an invalid with Arteriosclerosis 18.1.1918.
