Military History
He enlisted with 7th Reinf. 52nd Bn. Attended Corporal School 13.9.1916 – 20.11.1916. Transferred to Machine Gun Regiment as Private 20.11.1916.
Embarked Melbourne per RMS ‘Omrah’ for England 17.1.1917.

Marshall disembarked at Plymouth (file also notes Devonport) 27.3.1917. He marched in to the Australian Machine Gun Coy. Training Depot, at Belton Park, Grantham 28.3.1917. Marsh became sick with influenza and was admitted to Belton Hospital 21.4.1917. On discharge from hospital, he proceeded overseas to France to reinforce the 21st Machine Gun Coy. 26.6.1917. He marched in to Camiers. 27.6.1917. By AIF Order No 1151, Marsh was given a new designation to 14th Aust. Machine Gun Coy. He trained at a Gas School in the field 3.2.1918. At this time the use of mustard gas was being more frequently used and was a major cause of casualties. The 3rd Division fought in the Battle of Amiens in (August 1918), St Quentin and Beaurevoir Line (September 1918) as part of the advance towards the Hindenburg Line. (AWM 3rd Division) Marsh was wounded in action as part of this campaign. He received multiple GSW injuries (shoulder, thigh, legs, back) 1.9.1918. Marshall was transferred to No.6 Casualty Clearing Station then invalided to England by HS ‘Grantilly Castle’ 4.9.1918. He was admitted to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley 5.9.1918. He was then sent to rest camp and furlough. He reported to the No. 4 Command. Depot at Hurdcott 29.11.1918 and was then transferred to the Admin. at the Australian Army HQ in London 29.11.1918. Approval was given for Marsh to be repatriated to Australia early. Marshall requested an extension to 28.2.1919.

Disembarked/ Returned 4.7.1919.
Discharged 13.8.1919.
