Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Argyllshire’ A 8 for UK 9.11.1916

Roll Unit 28th Battalion. 17th Reinforcements Australian Imperial Force (AIF).
Jones disembarked at Devonport 10.1.1917 and marched in to the 7th Training Battalion at Rollestone 11.1.1917. Jones was admitted to the Military Hospital at Fargo with Influenza 6.2.1917. He was discharged 14.2.1917 and re-joined his unit 19.3.1917. Jones proceeded overseas to France from Folkestone 25.4.1917 and marched in to the 2nd Division Details Base. He was taken on strength with his Battalion. 2.5.1917. The 28th Battalion had its first major action at the Battle of Pozieres in July and August 1917.
Jones was admitted to hospital sick 3.8.1917. He re-joined his Battalion 12.10.1917. Jones was wounded in action shot in the head on Christmas morning, whilst on patrol in the front lines near Messines, he was taken to ‘D’ Station and died of wounds a couple of hours later 25.12.1917 (AWM Red Cross Files) (Reported West Australian Newspaper 22.1.1918). Jones was buried (near Red Lodge) at the Underhill Farm Cemetery 5 miles North West of Menin. His grave today is located at Underhill Farm Cemetery, Ploegsteert, Wallonie, Belgium. This cemetery contains 190 Commonwealth War graves, of which only 9 have identified soldiers.

Notes Victor had a twin Brother Harold, who was gassed and a brother named Lionel Walter Jones who was KIA in WW1
