Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Aeneus’ A 60 for England 30.11.1917.

Jones disembarked at Davenport and marched in to Codford for training 27.12.1917. He was admitted to Codford Base Hospital sick with mumps 1.1.1918. Jones marched in to the 13th Training Battalion at Codford after leaving hospital 15.1.1918. He proceeded overseas to France via Dover 1.4.1918. Jones marched in to Base Details at Calais with Unit 1.4.1918. He was taken on Strength with 51st Battalion 6.4.1918 and saw action at Villers-Bretonneaux. Jones was wounded in action receiving a gunshot wound to his back and shoulder 4.8.1918 at Dumart-sur-la-Luce, France( AWM4 23/68/30/ 51st Bn) . He embarked per Hospital Ship (HS) for Bristol, England as an invalid 7.8.1918 and was admitted to the General Hospital at Cheltenham 8.8.1918. Jones marched in to DS No.4 Command Depot at Hurdcott Camp 10.10.1918. He was admitted to the Military Hospital at Fovant with bronchial pneumonia 17.10.1918 and died of disease at Fovant Hospital 4.11.1918. He was buried with a Military Funeral at St George’s Parish Churchyard, Military Section, Fovant, Wiltshire, on consecrated ground 8.11.1918.

Notes Gilbert was the son of Mr. Edward and Mrs. Mary Jones of East Guildford and later Lions Mill/Mt. Helena. His brother-in-law J.L.J Briand married his sister Clara and won a Military Medal. His other brother in law- Godley was KIA.
