Embarked Fremantle HMAT ‘Port Melbourne’ A26 for UK 3.10.1916.
Roll Rank Private.
Roll Unit 16th Reinf. 27th Bn. AIF.
Howell disembarked with the 16th Bn, at Devonport 28.12.1916. He marched in to 19th Training Bn. at Rollestone 29.12.1916, for 3 months of intensive training. He was admitted to Hospital with Pleurisy 29.1.1917. After several months it was determined that he would be listed for early return to Australia for home service, invalided with bronchitis and senility 4.5.1917. He saw no active service and did not receive the Victory Medal.
Embarked Devonport per HT ‘Runic’ for Australia 14.5.1916.
Returned/Disembarked 26.6.1917.
Discharged 26.7.1917.
Final Rank Private with 27th Bn. AIF.
Medical Condition Invalided pleurisy and senility.
Awards and Medals British War Medal.
Notes Howells' brother James Norman also served (27th Bn ) and returned invalided the two brother's enlisted together in the same regiment and departed on the same ship. Howell was the son of William Norman Howell who owned land in East Guildford (GTL90 &91). and was proably born in East Guildford. It is not certain if the the 2 Howell houses still standing date back to the time of the births of children from Howell snr.'s second marriage.
