Military History
Hartung enlisted with the Australian Field Artillery. He was transferred for Artillery Training to Maribyrnong, Victoria.
Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Aeneus’ A60 for UK 3.10.1916.

Hartung disembarked at Plymouth England with the Field Artillery 19.11.1916. He marched in to Larkhill and was transferred to Bulford with a disability. He was hospitalised for 50 days 21.4.1917. Hartung proceeded overseas to France with his Unit 23.3.1917. He marched out to the Divisional Light Trench Mortar Bty. 27.7.1917. He was transferred to newly created 13th Aust. Light Trench Mortar Bty. 29.7.1917. This new unit was placed under the 13th Brigade, 4th Division. Hartung was accidentally injured 20.8.1918 during the defence of Amiens. He sustained an injury (haematoma) to his left leg. He embarked for England per HS ‘Panama’ and was taken to Sutton Veny 23.11.1917. He proceeded overseas to France, to rejoin his unit 12.5.1918. Hartung developed influenza 24.6.1918. He returned to the field and was engaged in action at Villers -Bretonneux. At 5am on 5.8.1918, Hartung was rolling a barrel of water from a limber to a dugout with Pte. Jenkins, when they were hit by a shell and seriously wounded. Privates Hartung and Jenkins were taken to 47th Clearing Station. Hartung received a severe GSW with shrapnel to his abdomen and face. Hartung was deemed too severely injured for surgery and died of injuries received in the Field 5.8.1918. He was buried at Crouy British Military Cemetery, Crouy St. Pierre, Picardie, France. Plot 4, Row D, Grave 15. The Cemetery is located 10 miles NW of Amiens, France.
