Military History
Hamersley enlisted as a Private with ‘B’ Squadron of the 10th Light Horse 13.1.1915.
Embarked HMAT ‘Surada’ A52 for Egypt 2.7.1915.

Hamersley disembarked at Egypt. He transferred from ‘B’ to ‘C’ Squadron of the 10th Light Horse 8.2.1915. Hamersley entrained to Alexandria, joined the MEF and embarked for Gallipoli 16.5.1915. He was admitted to 3rd Auxiliary Convalescent Hospital with glass in hand 16.5.1915. Hamersley became ill with influenza whilst at ANZAC and was transferred to Egypt to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Heliopolis 19.9.1915. He became seriously ill with enteritis and was sent to convalescent Camp at Port Said 2.11.1915. Hamersley was listed for return to Australia for 3 months change per ‘Borda’ 13.12.1915 (‘wounded or temporarily invalided’).
Hamersley embarked from Australia per ‘Karmala’ for Suez 11.2.1917 with the 25th Reinf. of the 10th Light Horse. He disembarked at Suez 11.3.1917 after his 3 month rest in WA. and marched in to the Details Camp at Moascar 11.3.1917. He was taken on strength 23.3.1917 and joined his unit of the 10th Light Horse at Deir el Belah 7.4.1917. Hamersley was hospitalized with a debility at Marakeb 25.7.1917 and invalided to the 1st General Hospital at Heliopolis 5.9.1917. Hamersley was promoted to Cpl. 15.11.1917 and marched out to Officer Cadet School 23.3.1918, he qualified for a Commission 15.6.1918, joined the Cadet School at Zietoun and was detached to the 10th Light Horse 30.8.1918. Hamersley was promoted to L./ Cpl. 10.8.1918, then to Lieut. 17.9.1918. He was hospitalized with Bronchitis 26.9.1918 and sent to Rest Camp 16.10.1918. He marched into his Unit and embarked at Kantara per HT ‘Theresa’ 27.11.1918. Hamersley was demobilized 17.10.1919 and was listed for return to Australia.
Embarked Kantara for Australia per HT ‘Oxfordshire’ 10.7.1919.
Returned/Disembarked Fremantle per RMS ‘Karmala’ 4.8.1919.
Appointment Terminated 20.9.1919.
