Military History

To hospital Mt. Kembla 7.2.1916. Discharged to duty 17.2.1916 .
Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Ulysses’ for A38 Egypt 1.4.1916.

Roll Unit 15th Reinf. 11th Bn AIF.
Grieve disembarked in Egypt with the 11th Bn. He was posted to Tel-el-Kebir and taken on strength with his Bn. Grieve proceeded to Alexandria and joined BEF 18.5.1916. He embarked per HT ‘Ivernia’ for France 20.5.1916. Grieve disembarked at Marseilles, France 25.3.1916. He was admitted to hospital 9.4.1916 with crushed toes. Grieve was transferred to HQ of the 1st Australian Entrenching Bn. and appointed A/Sgt. 26.6.1916. He was wounded in action in the field at Pozieres with a SW to his left arm. He was taken to the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station 31.7.1916. Grieve was appointed A/Regimental Sergeant Major 18.8.1916. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for services rendered during fighting at Pozieres 2.9.1916. He was appointed Acting Sgt. Major 26.6.1916 and Regimental Sergeant Major 14.10.1916. He was hospital sick with influenza 13.11.1916. Grieve was promoted to Temp/Cp. l 6.12.1916, then to Cpl. 24.1.1917. Grieve was Hospitalised with Trench Feet 27.2.1917. He was wounded in action at Lagnicourt (second time), with a GSW to his right side and abrasions to face 20.4.1917. . Grieve was admitted to Hospital at Boulogne 20.3.1917 then transferred to England to Harefield Hospital where he was treated for a shot wound to his right shoulder. He was Appointed 2nd Lieut. 20.4.191. Greive was listed for early return to Australia, for ‘change’ with SW to shoulder 3.7.1917.
Grieve was transferred back to the 16th Bn. in October 1917. He was wounded a third time in Belgium 19.10.1917, receiving a GSW to his head/ scalp. (possibly in a live bomb throwing accident at Devonshire Camp on 19.10.1917 recorded in 11th Bn. War Diaries) He was hospitalised at the Lady Wimbourne’s Hospital, Temple House, Rockhampton 26.11.1917. Grieve was promoted to Lieut. 19.12.1917. He transferred to the Empire Hospital, Vincent Square.This hospital was for Officers suffering nuerological trauma. Grieve was discharged to Sutton Veny 20.3.1918. He proceeded overseas to France 30.9.1918. He ceased to be seconded to the Overseas Training Bn.,15.4.1917   and resuned resumed with Regimental Duties 7.10.1918. Grieve was demobilised and marched out of France for return to UK and Australia.

Returned/Disembarked 8.7.1919.
Discharged/ Appointment Terminated 22.8.1919.
Final Rank Lieutenant 16th Bn AIF.

Notes Grieves surname was spelt as Greaves in the Post Office Directories. Grieves was known as Crichton and was married to Marion ( McNeill Trannent) and had a daughter Pearl at the time of his service, and later 3 other children Colin, Mollie and Donald. He migrated with wife Marion and daughter Pearl, from Edinburgh in 1911 and settled in Guildford. They are not recorded in the town prior to 1914 and may have rented a room. They are recorded at 9 Shenton Avenue from  1914. The family  moved to Stephen Street Guildford in 1918 and later to Bassendean. The eldest daughter Pearl married Allan James  Loveridge in 1935.  The family have had 3 generations attending Guildford Primary School.
