Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Chilka’ A 51 for Egypt 18.6.1915.

Green disembarked in Egypt with the 16th Bn. After a short period of intensive training, he joined the MEF for Gallipoli 2.8.1915. The 16th Bn. fought at Hill 97 in August 1915, suffering many casualties. They were evacuated from Gallipoli to Mudros then were transported to Alexandria 30.12.1915. Green, joined the BEF in Alexandria and embarked for France 1.6.1916. He disembarked at Marseilles 8.6.1916. The first major action the 16th Bn. fought was at Pozieres in July 1916 (AWM 16th Bn. ) Green was promoted to Cpl. in the field 11.9.1916. He was hospitalised with mumps 19.2.1917 and rejoined his unit 18.3.1917. The 16th Bn fought at Bullecourt in April 1917. (AWM 16th Bn. ) Green was reported missing in action 11.4.1917. In August, he was reported captured at Reincourt and held as a POW 9.8.1917. Green was interred at Limburg, Germany and repatriated to England 12.12.1918. He went AWOL twice in January 1919 whilst in London. Green was transferred to Australian HQ in London to Weymouth and listed for return to Australia
