Military History
Barlow disembarked at Plymouth 21.7.1916. He marched in to the Divisional Training Camp and underwent a period of intensive training. Barlow proceeded overseas to France with his unit via Southampton 25.11.1916. He was taken on strength with the 44th Battalion on 29.12.1916 in the front line trenches. During this harsh winter, Barlow was wounded in action in the field, receiving a gunshot wound to his left leg and buttock 11.1.1917. This was a minor injury and he attended the 10th Field Ambulance Station. Barlow rejoined his unit on 14.1.1917. He was admitted to the North Casualty Clearing Station from the field with scabies 24.3.1917 and sent to the Divisional Rest Station. He rejoined his unit 14.4.1917. The 44th Battalion fought in several battles at Ypres in June 1917, including at Messines and Broodseinde Ridge (Australian War Memorial 44th Battalion). Barlow was KIA near Messines in the Ploegsteert Wood area 4.6.1917. Barlow was buried by Rev. C.M. Collick 4.6.1917, at the Strand Military Cemetery, (Plot 2, Row E) Ploegsteert Wood, Wollonie, Belgium (2 ½ Miles SSW of Messines, France).

Notes Barlow had 2 brothers who also served in WW1 Harold George Barlow (SN 3775) and William James Barlow (SN 5989).
