Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Ulysses’ A38, for England 6.3.1916.

Devereux disembarked in England for a short period of intensive training. He was transferred to the 48th Bn. 20.5.1916. The 48th Bn. was raised in Egypt in March 1915, it combined soldiers from Gallipoli with new recruits mainly from SA and WA ( AWM 48th Bn. ). Devereux proceeded overseas to France and was taken on strength with the 48th on 29.7.1916. He fought with his Bn. at Pozieres and was wounded in the field, with a GSW to his left hand 6.8.1916 (mild). He was admitted to 8th Stationary Hospital 7.8.1916. (Reported West Australian Newspaper 16.9.1916). Devereux was discharged to base 7.8.1916 and rejoined his Bn. in France 7.9.1916. the 48th Bn. was involved in Third Battle of Ypres on the Western Front. The Australian, New Zealand and British troops were involved in an unsuccessful attempt to seize the Passchendaele Ridge from the defending Germans on 12 October 1917. Devereux was wounded in action in the field (2nd time) 12.10.1917 with a GSW to his right shoulder and left temple. Devereux was invalided to England per HS 'Grantilly Castle' and admitted to the Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol 23.11.1917. He was listed for early return to Australia as an invalid.
Embarked for Australia per ‘Dunvegan Castle’ to South Africa. Embarked at Durban, South Africa per ‘Field Marshall’ 13.3.1918 for Australia.
Disembarked Fremantle 13.5.1918.
Discharged 12.7.1918.
Final Rank Private 48th Bn. AIF.
Medical Condition Invalided with Shell wound to left temple.
Awards and Medals British War Medal, Victory Medal.
Notes Andrew Devereux served with his brother Alfred (KIA). He was one of 10 children born to Alfred and Margaret Devereux. In 1927, he married Daphne Edith Swinborn. Devereux died in 1961 aged 64 years.
