Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Persic’ A34 for UK 29.12.1916.

Roll Unit 8th Reinforcement 46th Bn. AIF.
Dean disembarked at Devonport England with his Bn. 3.3.1917. He marched in to the 12th Training Bn. at Codford. After 3 months of intensive training, he proceeded to France with 12th Training Bn. 3.6.1917. He marched in to the 4th Australian Division Base at Le Havre 6.6.1917 and joined the 46th Bn. from the reinforcements 21.6.1917. The 46th Bn. fought at the Battle of Messines in June 1917 and Passchendaele from July- November 1917. Dean was KIA at Zillebeke in the field 21.10.1917. His remains were recovered some time later, exhumed and re- interred to the Perth Cemetery (China Wall), (1 ½ miles E.S.E. Ypres) West Vlaanderen, Flanders, Belgium, Plot 4, Row D, Grave 16.
