Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Ceramic’ A40 for Egypt 22.12.1914.

Roll Unit. 16th Infantry Battalion. ‘D’ Company. Australian Imperial Force.
Crowley disembarked at Alexandria with ‘D’ Company 16th Battalion. After a brief period of training, at Heliopolis Camp, his Battalion was placed in the 4th Division. He entrained to Alexandria 11.4.1915, joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force 12.4.1915 and embarked for Gallipoli per ‘Hyda Pasha’. The 16th Battalion landed on April 25th at ANZAC Cove and fought at Bloody Angle and defended the ANZAC beachhead. Crowley became ill at the Dardanelles and was transferred to 17th General Hospital at Alexandria with slight fever 22.7.1915. On discharge from Hospital he was attached to the Transport Section at Sidi Bisch 22.11.1915. Crowley joined the British Expeditionary Force at Alexandria and embarked for France 1.6.1916. He disembarked at Marseilles 3.6.1916. The 16th Battalion spent much of late 1916 defending the trenches on the Somme. Crowley became sick and was sent hospital with Influenza 3.4.1917. He was invalided to England with Bronchitis 24.4.1915 and listed for early return to Australia with tuberculosis (TB).
