Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Mashobra’ A47 8.2.1915.

Roll Unit 10th Light Horse Regtiment, 3rd Light Horse Brigade – ‘B’ Squadron.
McCarthy disembarked in Egypt 8.3.1915. After a brief period of training, he was transported to Alexandria and embarked for Gallipoli 16.5.1915. He disembarked with his Regt. at Gallipoli 20.5.1916. He was evacuated from ANZAC with measles per HS A36 to Mudros and admitted to the No.2 Stationary Hospital, then was transferred to the No.1 Stationary Hospital 14.6.1915. McCarthy returned to duty with his Regt. 29.6.1915. He developed Influenza, and was evacuated to Light Horse Field Ambulance hospital 21.10.1915. He returned to duty 25.10.1915. McCarthy was evacuated with his Regiment to Mudros and then per HT ‘Beltana’ to Alexandria 25.12.1915. He marched into his Unit at Heliopolis and later marched out to Serapeum 26.2.1916. McCarthy contracted influenza, and was admitted to hospital 23.3.1916. His diagnosis was changed to Dengue Fever 5.4.1916. On recovery, he returned to duty and was taken on strength with the 3rd Training Bn. 19.4.1916. McCarthy was transferred to 32nd Bn. 5.7.1916 at Moascar. He embarked overseas with 32nd Battalion for England 2.8.1916 and marched in to the 3rd Training Bn. 22.8.1916. After a brief training period, he embarked overseas for France 16.9.1916, marched out to 32nd Bn. 25.9.1916 and was taken on strength 30.9.1916. He was promoted to Corporal 19.10.1916 and Temporary Sergeant 14.12.1916. He was detached to the Army Infantry School 12.1.1917 and rejoined his Unit 11.2.1917. McCarthy was subsequently appointed Lance Sergeant 12.12.1917. He became ill and was diagnosed with Tonsillitis 6.3.1917. He was admitted to the 15th Field Ambulance hospital 6.3.1917. McCarthy returned to duty 20.3.1917 and rejoined his Unit 21.3.1917. He was the hospitalized with scabies 1.4.1917. McCarthy was transferred to Casualty Clearing Stn. 24.4.191 and diagnosed with adenitis 25.4.1917. He was invalided to England 18.5.1917 and admitted – with an abscess in his groin 18.5.1917. McCarthy was discharged for Furlough 15.6.1917. He reported back to the Training Depot at Perham Downs 29.6.1917. Whilst at the Overseas Training Depot, he was reprimanded for neglecting to obey an A.I.F Senior Officer 20.7.1917. McCarthy proceeded overseas to France via Southampton 30.7.1917. He marched in from England 31.7.1917 and rejoined his Unit 5.8.1917. McCarthy was KIA at Polygon Wood (Celtic Wood) near Zonnebeke during the Third Battle of Ypres 13.10.1917 (AWM Red Cross Files). He was reportedly badly wounded and died on his way to the Bn. First Aid Post and was buried there, as it was not possible to get him to a cemetery. (AWM Red Cross Files) His death was reported in local WA newspapers (Kalgoorlie Miner 6.12.1917, Western Argus11.12.1917, Western Mail 30.11.1917, Northern Times 12.1.1918, The West Australian 16.4.1918). His body was not located by the War Graves Commission.
Today McCarthy is commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, West-Vlaanderen, Flanders, Belgium.

Notes Quarter Sergeant Massey wrote to McCarthy's sister and told how 'Mac' was KIA whilst his Battalion was holding th Line at Zonnebeke. This letter was reported in the Goomalling- Dowerin Mail 13.5.1918 p2)
